Electricity / Australia
How is our electricity changing?
Renewable generation is rising, but a generation share is not the same thing as reliable supply, affordable bills or completed transmission. This account separates the observed result from the investments and outcomes still to be checked.
Calendar year 2024. Total Australian electricity generation, including off-grid generation. This is not an on-grid target comparison.
What the evidence says
36%
of total Australian electricity generation came from renewable sources in 2024.
Open Australian Energy Statistics, Table OThe generation mix has changed.
The department estimates renewable sources generated 102,403 GWh in 2024, equal to 36% of total Australian generation. That is a national generation observation, not a claim about every state, hour or household.
Changing the mix also depends on networks.
Rewiring the Nation Fund carries a $19 billion original financing allocation. Its first announced investment committed $100 million to NSW clean-energy infrastructure. Financing capacity and a commitment are not completed infrastructure.
This number cannot tell us whether the system is better.
The renewable share does not measure reliability, household prices, emissions avoided, transmission completion or who gained and lost from the change.
Who is responsible
Follow the roles, not just the headline.
Generation, networks, markets and consumer outcomes sit across different institutions and jurisdictions. The records below establish only a bounded part of that chain.
- FundsAustralian Government
Allocated $19 billion of additional financing capacity to CEFC for this fund.
- FinancesClean Energy Finance Corporation
Appointed the financing arm of the broader Rewiring the Nation program.
- Delivery contextNSW energy infrastructure program
The first investment supports projects under the NSW infrastructure roadmap.
What remains unanswered
A responsible account shows its gaps.
- Current fund allocation and disbursements.
- Project-by-project construction milestones.
- Realised reliability, price and emissions effects.
